During the Nintendo E3 Treehouse, Reggie Fils-Aimé showcased the world premiere of Metroid: Samus Returns. for the Nintendo 3DS. Samus Returns is a re-imagining of the Gameboy classic ‘Metroid 2: Return of Samus.” Samus is sent to planet SR388 by the Galactic Federation to destroy the Metroids, in classic 2D Metroid style–an exploration-based sci-fi action adventure.

The developers are hoping to “fuse old mechanics with fine-tuning to please fans.” Among these include fully analogue aiming, allowing Samus to more precisely control her shots, even firing directly behind her. A melee counter ability was also shown in both the teaser and the gameplay, giving Samus the opportunity to react to an enemies physical attack with a critical melee blow of her own, if timed correctly.

A brand-new mechanic to the franchise, Aieon Abilities, were highlighted with a ‘Scan Pulse.’ The pulse reveals the surrounding map and any destructible environment in the current room. These Aieon Abilities are described as “very different from the technical abilities of the suit.”

Metroid: Samus Returns is slated to release September 15th.
